The naturalistic importance of the area is mostly due to the presence of birds. The stretches of water offer shelter to many aquatic birds and waders.
The most important species are: Little Grebe - or Dabchick, Bittern, Purple and Grey Herons, Little Egret, Night Heron and several species of ducks (Mallard, Teal, Shoveler, Garganey), Buzzard, Marsh Harrier, Mooorhen and Coots, Black-winged Stilt, Woodchat Shrike and Red-Backed Shrike, Kingfisher, Little Owl, Hoopoe, the Chiff-Chaff and other warblers (Phylloscopus sp.), etc.
There are also several species of amphibians, including the Crested Newt (Triturus carnifex), Tree Frog (Hyla intermedia), Green Frog (Rana esculenta complex), Agile Frog (Rana dalmatina), Common Toad (Bufo bufo) and reptiles, such as Common and Italian Wall Lizards (Podarcis muralis, Podarcis sicula), Green Lizard (Lacerta bilineata), Moorish Gecko (Tarentola mauritanica), Coluber (Hierophis viridiflavus), Grass Snake (Natrix natrix), the Three-toed Skink (Chalcides chalcides), etc.
