Fauna
Lake Sibolla, truly a mosaic of different ecosystems, is an important habitat for the many species of vertebrates associated with water, in particular fishes, amphibians and birds. The high quality of the water and its practically constant level during the year has made it a suitable habitat for ichthyofauna. Although the species are more or less the same as those in the nearby Fucecchio Marshes, many fishes like Carp and the Pike have the possibility to grow and reach their maximum size. Among the reptiles, the recent sighting in the Lake Sibolla of some individuals of the Pond Tortoise (Emys orbicularis) deserves mention, as it has never been reported before in these areas. Because of its small size, but also on account of the scanty protection round the water, the area is not attractive to water birds for long term stays or permanence, even though it lies on an important migratory route. The relatively deep waters, compared to the Fucecchio Marshes, particularly attract diving ducks like the Tufted Duck and Pochard.
