The Protected Area

The Protected Nature Area of Local Interest (ANPIL), established under the Resolution of the Commune Council of Sesto Fiorentino of 26th February,1998 n. 72, is about 50 hectares large. Management of the protected area is under the direct responsibility of the Administration of the Commune of Sesto Fiorentino. Voluntary Associations, appointed by the Commune, carry out day to day management, primary interventions and renaturalisation; in particular the management of the educational pond and environmental education activities have been entrusted to LIPU (the Italian League for the Protection of Birds), whilst supervision and day to day management of the green areas has been entrusted to the Associazione Lago di Padule (Padule Lake Association). The Commune also intends to avail itself of the work of Voluntary Associations involved in the "Insieme per Monte Morello e per la Piana" ("Together for Monte Morello and the Plain") Committee for special events regarding particular themes, for visits to the area and for promoting the protected area. At present hunting is prohibited on about 5 hectares, but a procedure is in course to extend the ban to 30 hectares.
