The Southern Bladderwort (Utricularia australis), a free-floating plant which is not rooted to the substrate, is "carnivorus". It obtains the nitrogen it needs by catching tiny animals: its slender leaves are covered with minute bladders full of air so thet they can float. But if they are touched by a minuscule aquatic invertebrate, they spring open and suck it up, filling themselves with liquid. Only the flowers emerge, qhich are pollinated by insects.
